Our International Story

Following the example set by Room 13 Caol, where young people took the lead in their own creative development, an international community of Room 13 studios has evolved as a grassroots movement among artists, young people, schools and communities worldwide.

These Room 13s take a variety of forms. They are largely self-organised as dedicated studios with artist-in-residence or after-school sessions, in community settings, led by volunteer teachers, parents or visiting artists, and are funded in many different ways. Currently, all international Room 13 studios are autonomous and independent of our Scottish charity.

If you’ve ever stepped inside a Room 13 studio, anywhere in the world, you will know that studio means the world to those to whom it belongs. Room 13 is local, everywhere. We hope by sharing our stories and connecting as a community of like-minded artists of all ages, Room 13 may continue to inspire local action, everywhere.

We recognise that wherever they are, Room 13 studios are better served by local action than by efforts to co-ordinate an international project.

We are proud of every studio that has embarked on this journey, and we’ll use our platform to promote Room 13 activity everywhere and to champion young people’s creativity in ways that we hope will benefit the studios, individuals and communities around the world that continue to draw inspiration from this remarkable idea.
